Tracing its origins to the 4th century BC The Orphan of Zhao was the first Chinese play to be translated in the West and has since been adapted by several playwrights, including the French philosopher and writer Voltaire as The Orphan of China in 1755. In 2012 the Royal Shakespeare Company presents a new adaptation of The Orphan of Zhao as part of trilogy of newly adapted international plays entitled A World Elsewhere. The Orphan of Zhao runs at the Swan Theatre from the 30th October 2012 to the 28th March 2013.
