Wonderful Town is an award winning light hearted comedy musical based on a series of short stories by American author Ruth McKenney entitled My Sister Eileen. In July 2012 Wonderful Town will show at the Cardiff Millennium Centre as part of its UK tour. Set in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1938 Wonderful Town tells the story of two sisters who travel from Ohio, Columbus to the bright lights of New York to succeed in their chosen careers, Eileen as an actress and Ruth as a writer, and to find true love. The two live together in a basement flat and set about trying to conquer New York, but disappointment, humiliation and heartache ensue as the two fumble though the city trying to get their big break and find their place in the Big Apple. Chaos follows them at every turn as they meet larger than life characters and cause trouble wherever they go. With lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Leonard Bernstein, renowned for his work with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the hugely successful musical West Side Story, Wonderful Town is a fantastic heart felt musical. Wonderful Town debuted on Broadway in 1953 starring comedy actress Rosalind Russell and Edie Adams, it was broadcast as a television special on CBS in 1958 and played in the West End in 1986 with Marueen Lipmen taking on the role of Ruth. The story in one way or another has been adapted for film, stage and Television. The 1955 film My sister Eileen was written by Richard Quine and Blake Edwards and featured superb choreography from Bob Fosse. Wonderful Town in Cardiff features Connie Fisher as Ruth.
