The award winning Lincoln Center Theater production of South Pacific will appear at the Wales Millennium Centre from the 17th to the 28th April 2012. Based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific the renowned Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is a firm favourite of musical theatre. The original production premiered in 1949 winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950 and ten Tony Awards. Revived in 2008 by the Lincoln Center Theater South Pacific the Musical won seven Tony Awards in the US before transferring to the UK. South Pacific Cardiff follows the story of an American nurse, Nellie Forbush, at a U.S. Naval base during World War II. Nellie falls in love with a French plantation owner, Emile, but is unsure of how it will end against the backdrop of the war. South Pacific Cardiff features a live orchestra and extensice cast performing the hit songs Some Enchanted Evening, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair, Younger Than Springtime, Bali Ha’i and There’s Nothing Like a Dame The stage production was adapted for film in 1958 winning an Oscar for Best Sound and nominated for several other awards. South Pacific Cardiff features Samantha Womack playing the role of Nellie Forbush, Paulo Szot and Jason Howard sharing the role of Emile De Becque, and Eastenders star Alex Ferns as Luther Billis.
