Simon Neill’s hilarious comedy play The Sunshine Boys gets a revival as it comes to The Savoy theatre in 2012. Starring Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Danny DeVito and Tony award-winner Richard Griffiths the play will show for a limited run from the 27th April to the 28th July. Written in 1972 The Sunshine Boys tells the story of a vaudeville comedy act and their attempts to reform. Willie Clark, played by Danny DeVito, and Al Lewis, played by Richard Griffiths, were once a great comedy duo but haven’t spoken for years. When a television company calls and asks them to reunite for a one off show, past tensions are brought to the surface as the two bicker their way onto stage. The Sunshine Boys is a superbly funny play and a must see for lovers of comedy. The 2012 production is directed by Thea Sharrock, who has worked on a number of West End shows including The Misanthrope, Equus and After The Dance for which she won the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Revival The Sunshine Boys has been successfully adapted for TV and film with the 1975 film starring George Burns and Walter Matthau wining both Academy and Golden Globe Awards. IN 1995 The Sunshine Boys was adapted for a television series starring Woody Allen as Lewis and Peter Falk as Clark and featuring Sarah Jessica Parker and Whoopie Goldberg in supporting roles.
