The Pitmen Painters Theatre Break

The Pitmen Painters, play opens at the Duchess Theatre on Wednesday 5th October following celebrated seasons at the National Theatre and on Broadway. As the winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best New Play this is a highly amusing and moving production which examines the lives of extraordinary men who do incredible things.

The Pitmen Painters, play transports you back to 1934 as a group of Ashington miners hire a professor to teach an art appreciation class. Quickly choosing theory over practice the Pitmen begin to paint prolifically. Within a few years their work is acquired by collectors and they are becoming friends with artists, but each day they continue to work down the mine.

Inspired by a book by William Feaver, playwright Lee Hall recounts a truly heart-warming story about the Ashington Painters.
